Vantich Scores 40 Points as Rancho Alamitos Beats Saddleback
Cuby Vantich made a school record 11 three-pointers to lead Rancho Alamitos to an 81-54 victory over Saddleback in a pool-play game at the Buena Park boys’ basketball tournament.
Vantich, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, made 11 of 18 three-point attempts and finished with 40 points. Vantich made eight three pointers in the second half and scored 18 points in the fourth quarter for Rancho Alamitos (2-1).
Ismael Isias scored 33 points for Saddleback (0-3), but was limited to four in the fourth quarter, when the Roadrunners were outscored, 33-12.
In another tournament game:
Newport Harbor 58, Sunny Hills 46--Dustin Illingsworth scored 20 points for Newport Harbor (2-1).
In the Bolsa Grande-Pacifica tournament:
Los Alamitos 85, Bolsa Grande 58--Senior center Jeff Grgas scored 26 points to lead the Griffins (3-0) into the tournament’s title game at 8:15 tonight against Claremont.
Ron Prettyman, a senior guard, added 16 points for Los Alamitos, which scored 29 points in the third quarter to take a 26-point lead.
Willie Montgomery, another senior guard, was top scorer for Bolsa Grande with 21 points. The Matadors (2-1) will play Edison in the third-place game at 6:20 p.m.
University 76, Chadwick 71--Andy Lawrence scored 25 points including making 10 of 11 free throws for University (2-1). The Trojans overcame a 22-7 deficit in the first half.
In the Buena Park tournament:
Buena Park 62, Kennedy 45--Chris Ingram had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Nathan Buzzini had 11 points and six assist to help Buena Park (3-0) advance to tonight’s championship final at 8 p.m. Chris Johnson had 15 points for Kennedy (1-2).
In a consolation game:
Magnolia 56, Downey 52--Geoffrey Clayton and Gabriel Costea each had 12 points to lead host Magnolia (2-1).
In the La Habra Tournament:
El Dorado 60, Calvary Chapel 49--Quinn Hawking scored 22 points, including four three--pointers, to lead visiting El Dorado (3-0).
David Patten contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Hawks who play La Habra today for the championship.
In the San Luis Obispo tournament:
Aliso Niguel 49, Crespie 45--The Wolverines (2-1) held Crespie to 18 first-half points en route to advancing to a tournament championship for the first time in school history. Brandon Sievers had 16 points and Sky Chambers had 14 rebounds for Aliso Niguel.
In the Taco Company Invitational:
Servite 77, Esperanza 72 (OT)--Martin Iti tipped in a missed shot by Roger Hogan with one second left in regulation to tie the score. Hogan then scored five of his 20 points in overtime to lead visiting Servite (3-0). The Friars got 14 points from Iti.
Doug Brown led Esperanza (2-1), with 23 points.
Troy 60, Santa Margarita 43--Sean Christensen scored 17 points for Troy (3-0), which went on a 17-9 run in the second quarter of the semifinal game. Santa Margarita is 2-1. The Warriors play Servite in the finals at Loara tonight at 8:15.
In nonleague games:
Corona del Mar 57, Mission Viejo 42--Kevin Hansen had 17 points and Brooks Morris had 14 to lead the visiting Sea Kings (2-0). Mission Viejo took a 13-10 lead after the first quarter, but Corona del Mar went on a 12-6 run in the second quarter to pull away.
Villa Park 65, Sonora 62--Tony Bryant scored 20 points and Sean Phaler added 14 points to lead host Villa Park (1-0).
