All-Star Water Polo Game Is Today at El Toro High

The Orange County all-star boys’ water polo game will be played at 1 today at El Toro High School. El Toro’s Don Stoll will coach the South and Buena Park’s Ted Clark the North. The South leads the series, 9-4.

The South team includes Newport Harbor goalie Tim Birdsong, Garrett Gentry (utility) of Corona del Mar and El Toro’s Trevor McMunn (two-meter) and Tim Craycraft (two-meters).

Foothill’s Pat Logan (two-meters), Michael Kim (two-meters) of Servite, Trevor Wawrzynski (driver) of Los Alamitos and Julian Gonzalez (two-meters) of Saddleback will be among the players representing the North.

Esperanza goalkeeper Kristin Skinner committed to North Carolina State. Skinner was a Times all-county selection last season.

* David Nelson has resigned as men’s soccer coach at Hope International after one season, Athletic Director Glenn Snyder said. Nelson, whose team had a 2-13-1 record last year, left to become athletic director at Union College in Barbourville, Ky.

* Five members of the Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer team were selected to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Pacific Division all-star team.

Senior forwards Antonio Martinez and Colby Jackson and sophomore defender Ray Ramirez earned first-team berths. Junior midfielder Duncan Oughton and senior defender Marco Mesrobian were selected to the second team.

* The Mission Viejo Elite Magic under-17 girls’ club soccer team is competing in the three-day Adidas Soccer IV Showcase at Spartan Stadium on the San Jose State campus this weekend.

The premier team is one of only 12 teams selected to participate, and the only one from California.

Kim Boortz (Mater Dei), Erin Droeger (Marina), Julie Peterson and Marissa Galvan (Santa Margarita), Jessica Lyons, Tawny Anderson and Kristen Moore (Capistrano Valley), Amanda Vanderlann (Aliso Niguel) and Katie Shield (Edison) will lead the Magic, which faces teams from Washington, Missouri and the Challenge Team from Houston, last year’s under-16 national champion.

The competition will be held during the NCAA’s Final Four “College Cup Weekend” and is an opportunity for top high school soccer athletes to showcase their talent for hundreds of college coaches.

* Four soccer players from Vanguard University received honorable mention when the NAIA announced its men’s and women’s All-America teams.

Josh McLeish, a sophomore midfielder from San Clemente, and Diego Goni Ayerza, a junior forward from Montevideo, Uruguay, were the men honored. Annelle Jacobs, a sophomore forward from Lake Forest, and Jennifer Bird, a sophomore midfielder from Pasadena, were the honored women.

Huntington Beach’s Todd Marcus, a senior forward at Westmont, also received honorable mention.
