Pomona Is a 3-1 Loser in Title Game

Cal Poly Pomona fell a victory short of a dream season Saturday, running into Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire in the Division II women’s soccer championship game at Miami.

After five consecutive overtime victories, the Broncos appeared headed there again before breaking down late and losing, 3-1, to the nation’s top-ranked team.

Minna Mustonen scored the first goal for Franklin Pierce (20-1) in the 72nd minute.

The game fell apart for the Broncos (17-6-1) 11 minutes later when Franklin Pierce scored twice within 90 seconds on an own goal and a shot by Angela Verdoes.

Freshman Shellie Shinedling scored in the 86th minute for Cal Poly Pomona, which had played nearly four hours of overtime in the last five matches before Saturday.

Sasha Victorine and Ryan Lee scored goals as the UCLA men’s soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I tournament with a 2-0 victory over Virginia before 3,510 at Charlottesville, Va.

Victorine scored from about 15 yards at the 4:51 mark and Lee headed in a ball at 77:45 for the final goal.

UCLA (19-2-0) also defeated Virginia (14-9-1), 2-0, on Oct. 31 in Westwood.

The Bruins play Friday in Charlotte, N.C., against the winner of today’s match between Penn State and Indiana.

North Carolina (23-2), seeking its 15th NCAA Division I women’s title, plays Notre Dame (21-3-1) in the championship game today at San Jose State’s Spartan Stadium.
