Branduinn Fullove scored Simi Valley High’s first nine points, but more importantly, its first six in overtime as the Pioneers defeated Pasadena Marshall, 77-71, Saturday night to win the Simi Valley tournament for the sixth consecutive season.

Fullove hit a layup off the overtime’s tip-off and four six free throws as Simi Valley outscored the Eagles, 8-2, to start overtime.

Marshall’s De’Verion Mackey sent the game into overtime by making a three-point basket from the right corner as time expired.

However, those would be the final points Mackey scored. He fouled out with 2:46 left in overtime, reaching over Fullove for a high inbounds pass. With Mackey unavailable, the Eagles (3-1) scored only four points.

Mackey scored 35 points, including nine three-point baskets, had eight rebounds and six assists.

Fullove had 23 points and six assists while tournament most valuable player Brett Michel scored 28, including 20 in the second half and overtime.

“It was a great team effort facing a great challenge,’ Michel said. ‘We needed to bear down and give the extra effort.’
