Mater Dei Wins Easily in Quarterfinals

Rickey Porter scored 15 points and Steve Scoggin 12 to help Mater Dei, the top-ranked team in the county, defeat Gardena Serra, 65-34, in a quarterfinal game of the Tournament of Champions on Thursday at Ocean View High.

Porter made three three-pointers for Mater Dei (4-0), which advanced to the semifinals to play Ocean View tonight.

Cedric Bozeman had 10 points and Jamal Sampson had eight points and seven blocked shots for the Monarchs, who shot 52% from the field.

In another Tournament of Champions game:

No. 6 El Toro 68, Long Beach Jordan 66--Kyle Martin made two free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal the victory for El Toro (3-1). Ashkan Nazeri had 18 points and six assists for the Chargers.

At the El Dorado Gary Raya tournament:

Aliso Niguel 54, El Dorado 52--Brandon Sievers scored 22 points to lead visiting Aliso Niguel (5-2). David Patten led El Dorado (6-1) with 17 points.

Los Amigos 53, Orange 45--Peter Vu scored 20 points and Jackson Nanthavong 18 to lead visiting Los Amigos (2-3).

Blake Dodge scored 14 points for Orange (1-7).

At the Fullerton tournament:

Magnolia 63, Bellflower St. John Bosco 45--Sophomore Geoffrey Clayton scored 27 points and Scott Henry 18 for visiting Magnolia (5-1).

In pool play at the Glendora Tournament:

Ontario 80, No. 7 Brea Olinda 74 (OT)--Ryan Wilber scored 23 points and Ryan Moore 16 for Brea Olinda (1-2).

At the La Quinta tournament:

Corona del Mar 58, Loara 52--Brooks Morris scored 16 points for the Sea Kings (4-0). Wes Wardrop scored 24 points for Loara.

In the Los Alamitos tournament:

No. 2 Los Alamitos 76, Pasadena Muir 67--Jeff Grgas scored 14 of his 28 points in third quarter when the Griffins (7-0) extended their lead to 15 points. Grgas finished with 10 rebounds for Los Alamitos (7-0).

No. 8 Villa Park 55, Long Beach Wilson 23--Matt Macginnis scored 17 points, including three three-pointers, for Villa Park (3-1).

In nonleague games:

Century 50, El Modena 43--Chris Ferretti scored eight of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as Century (3-0) outscored visiting El Modena, 20-16.

Orangewood Academy 105, San Gabriel Academy 88--Warren Tamanaha had 34 points and eight assists and Mike Mitchell had 19 points for visiting Orangewood (1-0).
