Three muggers shot and pistol-whipped a 30-year-old man in Santa Ana while stealing a gold chain around his neck Saturday evening, police said.

The victim, identified by police as J. Valencia of Santa Ana, was in stable condition Saturday night at UCI Medical Center in Orange, authorities said.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Valencia was walking through a parking lot in the 2700 block of West 17th Street when he was approached by three men in their 50s, said Sgt. John Gabelman of the Santa Ana Police Department.

One attacker grabbed the chain around Valencia’s neck while another held a revolver, Gabelman aid.

Valencia struggled and was shot in the right buttock, and then hit over the head with the pistol, Gabelman said.

Santa Ana paramedics stabilized Valencia at the scene and took him to UCI Medical Center.

Police are still looking for the three suspects.

They fled in a 1999 tan or cream colored four-door Cadillac with a California license plate of 4EQY081.

The sedan was last seen heading west on 17th Street, Gabelman said.
