Burroughs Gets By Thousand Oaks

Shaina Zaidi scored 19 points and Gracie Coronado added 14 for the Burroughs High girls’ basketball team, which advanced to the championship game of its 18th annual holiday tournament with a 58-47 pool-play victory Friday night.

The Indians (8-2) held Thousand Oaks scoreless in the final five minutes to seal the victory. They led almost the entire game, but got into early foul trouble that helped the Lancers (4-5) to take their only lead, 42-40, with 25 seconds left in the third quarter.

Game officials called 47 fouls.

“This was an awesome team win for us,” Coach Doug Nicol of Burroughs said. “We had girls who are used to playing three or four minutes a game come up big. The referees were calling it tight, but it was our job to adjust and we didn’t.”

Burroughs clung to a 48-47 lead with 5:10 remaining but ended the game with a 10-0 run while starters Sara Larquier and Danica Cunningham watched from the bench with five fouls.

Coronado put the game away by sinking five of seven free throws down the stretch. She played almost the entire second half with four fouls.

Courtney Vasquez scored 20 points and Erin Dieterle added 15 for Thousand Oaks.

Burroughs plays Agoura in tonight’s championship game at 7:30.

In other pool-play games:

Agoura 45, Birmingham 33--Jennifer Lacy had 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Chargers (7-2).

Jamie Kogler added 14 points and five assists for Agoura, which held Birmingham to two points in the second quarter and led, 27-11, at halftime.

Ofalangi Mailangi led the Patriots (3-2) with 12 points and Octavio Askew added eight points and five steals.

Hoover 44, Terry Fox (Canada) 40--Tenie Hartounian scored a game-high 23 points and Arsineh Eskandari added seven for the Tornadoes (5-4), who outscored the Ravens, 18-8, in the second quarter.

Anna Rowinska scored 19 points for Terry Fox, a secondary school in Vancouver, Canada.

North Hollywood 45, Glendale 42-- Richelle Sherman had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Kaipesha Price added 14 points for the victorious Huskies (4-4).

Arpenen Ararat scored 15 points for the Nitros (5-4), who finished second in their pool based on point differential. They play Hoover for third place today at 4:30 p.m.

Glendale could have forced overtime but missed four three-point shots in the final 20 seconds.
