Hernandez Gets Hot Hand in Second Half to Lift Oxnard, 65-51

Forward Ricky Hernandez scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half and Oxnard High defeated Santa Clara, 65-51, in a nonleague game Friday night at Santa Clara.

Hernandez finished with 10 rebounds.

Nicholas Curtis had 14 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots for Oxnard (8-1), ranked No. 3 in the region by The Times.

Jason Angell scored 20 points for Santa Clara (4-3).

Canyon 65, McNair 43--Matt Nelsen scored six of his 14 points in the third quarter for Canyon in pool play of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Canyon (4-3) outscored McNair, 25-9, in the quarter.

Brian Waite had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Canyon and Jeremy Haggerty scored 14 points.

Oak Park 67, Santa Paula 43--Jeremy Murphy scored 20 of his 30 points in the third quarter when the Eagles went on a 30-10 run to break open the championship game of their tournament.

Murphy, the tournament’s most valuable player, made three consecutive three-point baskets in the quarter. The Eagles (6-3) led, 58-30, after three quarters.

Santa Paula’s Ryan Frutos scored 12 points and was selected to the all-tournament team.

Hueneme 53, Grace Brethren 44--Anthony Camper scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for Hueneme in the fifth-place game of the Oak Park tournament.

Camper made three three-point baskets in the final quarter, when Hueneme (5-3) outscored Grace Brethren, 25-9.

Franklin Thompson had 14 points and six of the Vikings’ 14 steals, and Eric Watkins had six points and eight assists.

L.A. Baptist 56, Pasadena Poly 47--Mike Madigan scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half for L.A. Baptist in a consolation game of the Carpinteria tournament.

Madigan had 12 rebounds, Andrew Bloomfield scored 15 points and Jordan Roth had 11 assists.

Campbell Hall 82, Calabasas 46--Jesse Foster had 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for host Campbell Hall in a nonleague game.

Campbell Hall (6-2), ranked No. 10 in the region by The Times, had 26 assists.

Robert Locke led Campbell Hall with 10 assists. Teammate Hassan Bassiri had 22 points and eight assists.

Oak Bay (Canada) 46, Poly 44--Seth Vargas scored on a layup with one second remaining but it wasn’t enough for the Parrots in the championship game of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Mike Mgdesyan scored 20 points for Poly (4-6).

Simon Straith scored 20 points, including six three-point baskets, for Oak Bay (13-0).

El Monte 56, Verdugo Hills 54--Kevin Baird scored 29 points for Verdugo Hills (4-6) in the fifth-place game of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Moorpark 65, Marshall 58--Todd Tomlinson scored 26 points for Moorpark (6-0) in pool play of the La Canada tournament.

Tomlinson made 10 of 12 free throws.

Nordhoff 66, Rio Mesa 49--Dusty Baier scored 11 points and Etienne Emanuel had five steals for host Nordhoff (7-2) in a nonleague game.

Nordhoff, sparked by two three-point baskets by Matt Murphy, outscored Rio Mesa, 15-7, in the third quarter.

Hoover 74, Blair 62--Kris Rubio scored a season-high 43 points for Hoover (1-6) in pool play of the Trabuco Hills tournament.

Rubio, who had three three-point baskets, scored 18 of Hoover’s 20 points in the third quarter.
