A Santa Ana firefighter suffered minor injuries early Sunday morning when a water-saturated ceiling collapsed on him as he fought a condominium blaze, fire officials said.
A resident of a condominium complex in the 3700 block of South Bear Street called 911 about 7:30 a.m. after noticing that his neighbor’s chimney was on fire, Santa Ana Battalion Chief Bill Zastro said.
Fire crews doused the blaze in less than an hour, Zastro said. The firefighter suffered a neck sprain and a burn to his cheek when some ceiling drywall fell on him, knocking him off his feet. He is expected to be back to full duty today, Zastro said.
The family that lived in the condominium told fire officials they had used pieces of lumber to light a fire Saturday night, but the flames were out before they went to bed. Sunday morning, they told officials, they relighted the fire, but this time their stucco-encased metal chimney caught fire, Zastro said.
The damage to the condominium was estimated at about $100,000. Two other units were damaged by smoke, Zastro said.
