Healthy Again, Woodbridge Girls Gain Semifinals

The Woodbridge girls’ soccer team is finally getting to see what it’s capable of, as several starters have returned to the lineup after being injured. Those players have helped the fourth-ranked Warriors (7-1) advance to the semifinals of the Excalibur tournament at Foothill High.

Senior forward Sierra Cristiano and junior midfielder Christine Johnson, who missed the entire preseason until this week, led the fourth-ranked Warriors to a 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Trabuco Hills (5-3). The team will face West Hills Chaminade in the semifinals at 9:30 a.m. today.

Johnson, a transfer from Washington state who has been hampered by a hamstring pull, put the Warriors up early when she scored off an assist from Ina Kain.

Cristiano, who has been out with a foot injury, set the Warriors’ single-season scoring record (20) last season, and is four goals away from the career record (40).

On Tuesday, she put the game away, scoring her first goal of the season late in the first half, off an assist from Emily Schwimmer.

The championship game will be at 2:10 p.m. today.
