Gientke Directs Ventura to Title With MVP Effort

Alex Gientke had 15 points and five rebounds for Ventura High in a 57-38 victory over Oxnard in the championship game of the Arroyo Grande tournament Wednesday.

Gientke was selected the most valuable player of the tournament, and teammates Katy O’Brien and Kristine Gleisberg were picked to the all-tournament team.

O’Brien scored nine points and Gleisberg scored eight for the Cougars (12-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.

Memory Rhone and Sienna Abraham were all-tournament selections for Oxnard (9-5), which is ranked No. 9 in the region.

In other games:

Simi Valley 45, Schurr 38--Mikali Bender made a three-pointer with 1:30 left to give Simi Valley the lead during the fifth-place game of the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Bender had five of her nine points in the fourth quarter. Simi Valley (10-4), ranked No. 10 in the region by The Times, outscored Schurr, 19-12 in the final quarter.

Elise Metcalf scored 17 points for the Pioneers.

Buena 52, South Eugene (Ore.) 34--Kelly Greathouse scored 20 points and Courtney Young had 13 for the Bulldogs in a semifinal victory of the Northwest Holiday Classic at Westview High in Beaverton, Ore.

Courtney LaVere had nine points and 11 rebounds for No. 2-ranked Buena (10-3).

Channel Islands 55, Anaheim Century 53--Monique Taylor put back a missed shot with three seconds left to give the Raiders the victory in the championship game of the Palm Desert tournament.

Taylor had 25 points and 11 rebounds for No. 4-ranked Channel Islands (14-0).

Harvard-Westlake 56, Walnut 49--Brooke Porter made five consecutive free throws to break a 49-49 tie in a third-round game of the state elite division of the Ayala tournament.

Porter finished with 12 points. L’Tanya Robnett scored 23 points for Harvard-Westlake (8-3), ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times.

Newbury Park 60, Cathedral City 52--Bridget Harris scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half for Newbury Park in a pool-play game in the Open Division of the Ayala tournament.

Rachel Hever scored 10 points for the Panthers (8-4), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times.

Nordhoff 48, Arroyo Grande 45--Lauren Cresto made a three-point shot to break a 42-42 tie with 42 seconds left in the seventh-place game of the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Cresto finished with nine points for Nordhoff (3-9).

Billy Jo Grant scored 18 points for Arroyo Grande (4-7).

Alemany 72, Las Vegas Reno 69--Kate Beckler scored 27 points for Alemany (10-2) in a Huntington Beach Marina tournament consolation game. Nyasha Bralock scored 17 for Alemany (10-2).

Moorpark 78, Immaculate Heart 43--Kristin Nada had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Musketeers (9-3) in a consolation victory at the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Nada scored 12 points in the third quarter when Moorpark outscored Immaculate Heart, 26-11.

Santa Paula 61, San Gabriel 36--Sarah Kolbeck had 20 points and 25 rebounds to lead the Cardinals (8-4) to a consolation victory in the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Paraclete 54, L.A. Baptist 45--Julie Kolesar scored 20 points for Paraclete (9-4)in the championship game of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Kolesar was selected to the all-tournament team and teammate Erika Hernandez was picked the tournament’s most valuable player.

Monroe 47, Manual Arts 39--Rasheeda Gray scored 16 points for Monroe in a Canoga Park tournament semifinal.

San Antonio Churchill 51, Notre Dame 45--Sierra Hauser-Price’s 20 points were not enough for Notre Dame (9-3) in a Texas Invitational tournament consolation game.
