SUPER BOWL NOTES

From Staff and Wire Reports

Quarterback John Elway received a car and trophy for being named Super Bowl most valuable player at a news conference in Miami and reiterated that no decision has been made on his future with the Broncos.

After last year’s Super Bowl victory over Green Bay, Elway didn’t announce he would return until four months later. He expects to make a quicker decision this time.

“It would be great to come back and three-peat,” Elway said. “But also, it would be nice to walk away at the level that I’m playing right now. I don’t want to walk away too late, but I also know that if I play like I played last night that I can play a little bit longer. There are physical considerations. It was a long haul for me this season.”

Elway, 38, missed all or parts of six games this season because of hamstring, back and rib injuries. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 336 yards and one touchdown and ran for another in the Super Bowl.

A post-Super Bowl free-for-all pitted vandalizing fans against police officers in downtown Denver.

The crowd, estimated at 1,000, tipped over trash cans and cars, broke windows in dozens of buildings, spilled newspaper racks, ripped down street signs and lit bonfires.

“It was like following the path of a tornado,” said Andrew Hudson, a spokesman for Mayor Wellington Webb. “It was just a really ugly scene by a lot of obnoxious people who were drunk.”

At least 20 people were arrested and property damage was estimated at $160,000, he said.

On an overcast day, thousands of fans turned out in Atlanta for a parade honoring the Falcons.

The Falcons rolled down Peachtree Street atop fire trucks and later assembled at a small park before an estimated crowd of 5,000.

The loudest cheers went to Coach Dan Reeves, running back Jamal Anderson, cornerback Ray Buchanan and safety Eugene Robinson, arrested on a sex charge Saturday night in Miami.

Quarterback Chris Chandler, who threw three interceptions Sunday, was booed loudly.

Atlanta is the site of next year’s Super Bowl.

Robinson will probably be arraigned within 30 days and could have charges dropped if he is offered--and completes--a diversion program, according to the State Attorney’s office in Miami-Dade County. He could otherwise face a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail if convicted.
