Buena Claims Channel Title With Victory Over Ventura

Buena High swept past cross-town rival Ventura, 3-0, on Thursday to capture its sixth consecutive Channel League girls’ soccer title.

The Bulldogs (20-2-2, 7-0-1 in league play), who got goals from J.J. Toohey, Natalie Sanderson and Ashleigh Garmon, have won seven of the last nine league championships.

“This was probably our best game of the season,” said Coach Trisha Butterbaugh. “We attacked very well, we were solid defensively and we were really in control the last 20 minutes.”

Toohey opened the scoring in the 27th minute with her 16th goal, assisted by Sanderson.

Buena opened a 2-0 lead four minutes after halftime when Sanderson scored her 32nd goal on a pass from Lisa Engel. Two minutes later, Garmon scored the final goal with Engel earning her 19th assist.

Ventura is 13-8-4, 3-1-3.

Quartz Hill 4, Highland 1--Julie Gold scored her 15th goal, Kellie Cox her 14th and the host Rebels (13-4-3, 8-0) overcame a halftime deficit to clinch at least a tie for their third Golden League title in four years.

Camarillo 5, Hueneme 0--Alix Rucinsky scored her ninth and 10th goals and Bonnie Bornhauser her 11th for the Scorpions (15-3, 10-0) in a Pacific View League game at Camarillo.

Canyon 5, Saugus 2--Jaime Rendich and Nicole Modugno each scored two goals and the Cowboys (11-3-3, 5-1-3) moved to within a point of first-place Saugus with a Foothill League victory at Canyon.

Granada Hills 5, Grant 1--Sabrina Love scored three goals to lead the Highlanders (12-9, 2-5) to a Coast/Valley League victory at Granada Hills.

BOYS’ GAMES

Birmingham 2, Taft 0--John Ortega scored in the first half and Mike Erush in the second to help the Patriots (8-0-4, 8-0-4) remain in a first-place tie with El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft (1-9-2, 1-9-2).

Chatsworth 2, San Fernando 1--Jose Dominguez scored his sixth goal in four games shortly after halftime to lift the Chancellors (6-6-2, 6-4-2) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory over San Fernando (2-6-4, 2-6-4) at Chatsworth.

Kennedy 1, Cleveland 0--Christian Portillo headed Diego Gonzales’ corner kick into the penalty area, where Sergio Munoz scored in the 60th minute to give the Golden Cougars a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Cleveland.

Mario Merino stopped a penalty shot in the 64th minute for Kennedy (7-8-5, 3-6-3).

El Camino Real 2, Granada Hills 1--Mike Petchenick headed in his 11th goal midway through the second half and the Conquistadores (14-4-3, 9-1-2) overcame a halftime deficit to down the Highlanders (3-4-5, 3-4-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.

Rio Mesa 1, Channel Islands 0--David Cervantes scored on a free kick in the 25th minute to lift the Spartans in a Pacific View League game at Channel Islands.

Cervantes’ goal was his 18th of the season and the 58th of his career, tying the school record held by Jaime Ambriz. Rio Mesa (16-3-4, 9-1) tied the school record for victories in a season.

Crescenta Valley 2, Muir 0--Lindon Pecorelli scored his 15th goal to help the Falcons (10-6-5, 4-3-1) in a Pacific League game at Crescenta Valley.
