Matadors’ Power Surge Lights Up Oregon State

There was nothing ordinary about Cal State Northridge’s 16-4 baseball victory Friday over Oregon State.

The Matadors sent 22 batters to the plate and scored 15 runs on 11 hits during the seventh and eighth innings at Matador Field.

Eric Horvat had three of his four hits for Northridge (3-2) during the two big innings, driving in three runs and scoring twice while collecting a single and two doubles.

The Beavers (7-6) held a 2-1 lead on home runs by Joe Gerber and Troy Schader off Jim DeBiase before Northridge’s power exhibition.

DeBiase (3-0), who struck out 12, allowed two runs in the ninth inning before Matt MacLeod came on to end the game by striking out Drew Hedges.

DeBiase scattered six hits and walked three.

Kevin Patrick hit a two-run home run for Northridge in the seventh inning and a run-scoring single in the eighth, and Adrian Mendoza had a two-run double in the eighth.

Jeremy Sickles had four hits for the Matadors, including a third-inning leadoff home run and a run-scoring double in the seventh.

B.R. Cook (1-1) struck out nine for Oregon State, allowing seven runs on eight hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings.
