Wood Uses Bat, Body to Help Saddleback Win

Pat Wood drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of both games as Saddleback beat Merced and Glendale in Mitsubishi baseball tournament games Saturday.

Wood, a third baseman who played at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last season, hit a two-out home run in the ninth as the Gauchos beat Merced, 12-11, in the first game.

Wood was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to give Saddleback a 10-9 victory over Glendale in the second game.

Josh Arhart had opened the ninth with a homer to tie it, 9-9, for Saddleback (8-0). The Gauchos loaded the bases on two singles, a sacrifice and an intentional walk.

Clare Langford was seven for nine with five RBIs in the two games for Saddleback.

In other Mitsubishi tournament games:

Cypress wins twice--Brandon Pack had five hits and seven RBIs in Cypress’ first game, a 17-0 victory over Mt. San Jacinto. The Chargers beat Palomar, 5-3, in the second game. Gerald Laird went three for four and Cory Sullivan had two RBIs.

Golden West 18, Merced 1--Ryan Brown (2-0) held Merced (1-5) to three hits over eight innings for Golden West (6-2).

Brown also singled, tripled and drove in a run.

The Rustlers had 21 hits, led by Luis Santos, who was four for six and knocked in four runs.

In an earlier game, Glendale beat the Rustlers, 18-10.

In the Southwestern tournament:

Fullerton 10, Grossmont 7--Fullerton scored four runs in the eighth inning to come from behind. Eddie Romprey was four for four, including a double, and drove in two runs. The Hornets got home runs from Mike Caira, Darren Frank and David Fischer.

Orange Coast 8, El Camino 0 (7, mercy)--Mike Carey pitched a three-hit shutout for Orange Coast (5-3). Brandon Thompson hit a two-run homer and Matt Pope had a single and double and drove in three runs for the Pirates.

In Long Beach softball tournament:

Santa Ana splits--Santa Ana (1-2) won its first game, 3-2, in five innings over El Camino (0-2). In the second game, Santa Ana lost to Riverside, 8-6, which outscored the Dons 5-3 in the seventh inning. Riverside is 2-1.

In the Cypress softball tournament:

Saddleback 6, College of the Canyons 0 (6, time limit)--Anne Skidmore had two hits and two RBIs for Saddleback (1-0).

Saddleback 11, Los Angeles Pierce 0 (4, mercy)--Jennifer Carlisle had three hits, including a triple, and gave up no hits in four innings in the circle for Saddleback (2-0).
