Fire Destroys Part of Flower-Drying Business

Share

A fire gutted an industrial building on Palm Avenue on Sunday afternoon, destroying part of a flower-drying business and causing an estimated $100,000 in damage.

The fire began at about 12:30 p.m. in a metal storage area at 103 N. Palm Ave., near Main Street. Flames caused extensive damage to the 4,000-square-foot building, but did not reach an adjacent 10,000-square-foot warehouse.

Four Seasons Flowers, a business specializing in flower drying and arranging, owns both the main building and the burned storage area, said Santa Paula Fire Capt. Kevin Fildes. He said he could not reach the owners Sunday.

About 70 firefighters from Santa Paula, Ventura, Fillmore and Ventura County fire departments were called to the blaze. Firefighters contained the flames by 1:30 p.m. Nobody was hurt.

A team of hazardous-materials specialists also came to the scene to investigate three suspicious barrels, which they determined to be safe, Fildes said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
