Proffitt Pitches a Regal No-No

Kathy Proffitt threw the third no-hitter of her career Tuesday and the Cal Lutheran softball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-0, in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

The Regals (2-2), who dropped the second game, 8-6, supported Proffitt (1-1) with five hits.

Kristine Everly had three hits and two runs batted in.

Proffitt walked four and had no strikeouts.

In the second game, Newbury Park native Michele Disney had three hits and an RBI for the Toros (4-5), who parlayed three hits and two errors into the winning runs.

Yvette McNally and Julie Gerughty each had two hits for Cal Lutheran in the second game.

In other softball games:

Antelope Valley 3, Moorpark 1--Tashie Aguinaga and Nadine Klemenz each hit home runs for the Marauders (3-3) in a nonconference game at Antelope Valley.

Moorpark dropped to 7-2.

Glendale 7, Rio Hondo 5--Teresa Estrada hit a two-run home run during a four-run seventh inning for Glendale in a nonconference game at Rio Hondo (1-1).

Jeanise Smith drove in two runs with three hits, including a double, and scored twice for Glendale (1-1).

BASEBALL

Ventura 15, Antelope Valley 9--Kurt Probasco had three hits, including a two-run home run, and six RBIs for Ventura (4-3) in a nonconference game at Antelope Valley (0-8).

Pirate starter David Turner (3-1) allowed two unearned runs, struck out eight and walked one in five innings.

The Pirates committed five errors.

Moorpark 11, Fullerton 9--Zack Gordon drove in four runs with four hits, including two home runs, for host Moorpark in a nonconference game.

Steve Nelson drove in two runs for Moorpark (7-2) with three hits, including a home run.

L.A. City 12, Valley 3--Gil Pelayo had two hits and an RBI for host Valley (4-5) in a nonconference game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 91, La Verne 59--Nicole Sanchez had 26 points and Haley Jones scored 23 at La Verne to help Cal Lutheran pull into a tie for first place in the SCIAC with Pomona-Pitzer.

Sanchez made 10 of 14 shots, including six of nine three-point baskets. Jones, who grabbed eight rebounds, made nine of 10 field goals.

The Regals (19-3, 8-1 in SCIAC) went on a 16-3 run to take an 18-5 lead halfway through the first half.

Heather Johnson scored 16 points for La Verne (8-15, 3-7).

Cal Lutheran is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division III Western Region.

MEN’S TENNIS

Ventura 9, Hancock 0--Dennis Katz and Keith Rehklau combined to lose only three singles games and led host Ventura (3-1, 1-0) in its Western State Conference opener.

Pierce 8, Bakersfield 1--The Brahmas (1-1, 1-1) lost their only match, at No. 1 singles, by default and cruised in a WSC match at Pierce.
