Bryan and Top-Seeded Ilie Advance at ATP Tennis Event

Former NCAA champion and wild-card entry Bob Bryan continued to win, beating Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay, 6-4, 5-3, in a second-round singles match Wednesday at the Laguna Hills ATP Challenger.

Top-seeded Andrew Ilie of Australia had little trouble with Stefan Koubek of Austria, winning, 6-2, 6-2. Former San Clemente High standout David Roditi teamed with Jack Waite teamed to defeat Grant Goyle of Australia and Vemic Dusan of Yugoslavia, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), in first-round doubles.

Corona del Mar will host Friday’s Southern Section Division III-A boys’ basketball semifinal playoff game against Ojai Nordhoff, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said.

The game, originally scheduled at Estancia, begins at 7:30 p.m.

A Sea King spokesman said officials at Nordhoff and the Southern Section office in Cerritos, which prefers neutral sites at this stage of the playoffs, agreed to the change. The Division III-A bracket has only eight teams, and Corona del Mar (17-10) had a road game, while Nordhoff (19-5) was at home in the first round.

In Division II-A semifinals Friday, second-seeded Santa Margarita (26-2) hosts Lakewood Mayfair (24-6) at Woodbridge High and Ocean View (25-5) plays top-seeded Inglewood (28-3) at Inglewood Morningside High.

Mater Dei (28-3) will host Moreno Valley (20-7), tentatively at Ocean View High, in a Division I-A quarterfinal.

In Division II-AA quarterfinals, Sonora (22-6) plays top-seeded Compton Dominguez (25-3) at Compton College, third-seeded Brea Olinda (26-2) meets Cerritos Gahr (17-10) at Cerritos High and Newport Harbor (24-5) seeks to set a school record for most victories in a season against fourth-seeded Moreno Valley Rancho Verde (25-4) at Perris High.

Northwood High continued dipping into Irvine’s coaching staff, hiring Randy Rossi to be its boys’ and girls’ cross-country coach.

Rossi had been the Vaquero girls’ cross-country coach and assistant track coach for 19 seasons. His cross-country teams won eight league titles, made 15 appearances at Southern Section finals and won state titles in 1993 and ’98.

Other former Irvine athletic personnel previously named to positions at Northwood, which opens in the fall, include Rick Curtis, athletic director and football coach, and Ed Ulloa, freshman football coach.

Diane Vaughan, who coached girls’ basketball at Irvine High, has resigned for personal reasons, Athletic Director Erik Terry said.

The Vaqueros were 16-11 in Vaughan’s season as coach; they shared third in the Sea View League, but lost a one-game playoff to Woodbridge and didn’t advance to the Southern Section tournament.

Rachel Olvera, an outfielder for the Cal State Fullerton softball team, will be sidelined for the rest of the season because of a torn knee ligament, according to Coach Judi Garman.

Garman said Olvera will undergo surgery in about three weeks.

Olvera, a junior, has been the regular center fielder for the last two seasons. She batted .329 as a freshman and .295 last season.

Olvera was injured when she jammed her left knee running in for a short fly ball in a season-opening tournament in Hawaii.
