Esperanza Beats Huntington Beach

Tenth-ranked Esperanza rallied to defeat Huntington Beach, 55-50, in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game Tuesday night at Huntington Beach.

The Aztecs (12-5, 2-0) went on a 16-2 run to start the third quarter, and took a 42-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Kristen Peters scored 17 and Allison Gerber 14 for Aztecs.

Courtney McKinney led Huntington Beach (11-5, 1-1) with 15 points.

In other Sunset League games:

No. 2 Edison 56, Los Alamitos 38--Michelle Zylstra had 23 points for Edison (14-4, 2-0).

No. 3 Marina 65, Fountain Valley 40--Marina’s Chanda McLeod scored 18 points and teammate Nikki Lee had 12. Marina guard Karyn Fierst was lost five minutes into the game with sprained ankle and is questionable for Thursday’s game against Huntington Beach.

In the Academy League:

Connelly 54, Orangewood 32--Tiffany Nasralla’s 17 points led Orangewood (1-11, 0-1), which was outscored, 20-4, in the third quarter. Connelly is 12-1, 5-4.

In the Century League:

No. 9 Foothill 59, Villa Park 37--Sophomore’s Kristen Mann scored 15 points and had seven assists and six steals from her post position for Foothill (14-3, 2-0). Villa Park is 8-10, 1-1.

Canyon 53, Santa Ana Valley 34--Meghan O’Neill had 13 points and eight assists and Stephanie Hillon had 10 points and 13 rebounds for Canyon (14-3, 2-0).

Orange 36, El Modena 32--Randi Perry (10 points) had 26 rebounds for Orange (10-8, 1-1).

In the Express League:

Rolling Hills 65, Liberty Christian 37--Stephanie Wu led Liberty Christian with 20.

In the Golden West League:

No. 8 Westminster 55, Ocean View 28--Diana Hernandez scored 14 points and Erin Arganda added 11 for Westminster (14-3, 3-0). Ocean View is 6-8, 1-2.

Rosary 65, Tustin 53--Maggie Barnett scored seven of her 21 points in the opening quarter, when visiting Rosary (13-6, 3-0) took a 23-10 lead.

Saddleback 49, Santa Ana 30--Prabjot Kaur scored 20 points and Denise de la Rosa had 11 points and 11 rebounds for host Saddleback (7-9, 1-2).

In the Orange League:

No. 1 Brea Olinda 103, Anaheim 23--Chelsea Trotter scored 25, Lindsey Davidson 20 and Jill Trader 16 for Brea (12-3, 1-0).

Savanna 51, Western 38--Reanita Starr scored 15 points, hitting three three-pointers, to lead host Savanna (6-11, 1-0). Andraya Gipson added seven points and nine rebounds.

Valencia 48, Magnolia 42--Monika Jackley scored 23 and had 13 rebounds for Valencia (11-5, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 58, University 48--Jenny Earnest scored 15 for Costa Mesa (11-6, 2-0) and Evelyn Powers and Nancy Hatsushi contributed with 14 and 13 points respectively. Laguna Hills 73, Laguna Beach 22--Anne Bubriski scored 18 for Laguna Hills (10-6, 2-0) and Shannon Owens (14 points) had eight steals.

In the Sea View League:

No. 6 El Toro 55, Newport Harbor 37--Gioconda Mendiola scored 16 points as El Toro, rallying from a 29-27 halftime deficit, held Newport Harbor (12-7, 0-2) to eight second-half points. Alyssa Paul led the Sailors with 14 points.

Woodbridge 49, Corona del Mar 30--Bryn Riley had 20 points to lead host Woodbridge (9-7, 1-1). Corona del Mar is 8-10, 0-2.

Santa Margarita 53, Irvine 44--Santa Margarita hit three three-pointers to jump to a 23-8 at the end of the first quarter. Colleen O’Leary (15 points, five assists) led Santa Margarita (11-6, 2-0). Jodi Carlson scored 14 for Irvine (12-5, 1-1).

In the South Coast League:

No. 5 San Clemente 65, Trabuco Hills 22--Colleen Turnbull had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Debby Caine had seven assists and five steals for San Clemente (13-6, 3-0).

Dana Hills 46, Capistrano Valley 35--Nicki Howard had 18 points and seven steals for Dana Hills (14-4, 2-1).
