McKenzie Out a Week Because of Eye Injury

Share

Left wing Jim McKenzie will be out at least a week because of an eye injury suffered in Sunday’s victory over Edmonton.

McKenzie has bleeding in and behind his right eye, according to Duck Coach Craig Hartsburg. McKenzie needed six stitches to close a gash above the eyelid. Hartsburg said McKenzie was cut when he collided with Edmonton’s Georges Laraque, then was clipped by teammate Matt Cullen’s stick.

“We’re going to take a week and see how he is,” Hartsburg said.

Johan Davidsson, who practiced with the team for the first time in nine days Monday, will take McKenzie’s spot. Davidsson had been out because of a sprained ankle.

Defenseman Fredrik Olausson was brought in to beef up the power play and he has had a hand in the recent success.

Olausson had a goal and two assists on power plays in Sunday’s 6-4 victory over the Oilers. He has five goals and 12 assists on the power play this season.

“He sees the ice so well and he’s patient,” Hartsburg said. “People in the arena are yelling, ‘Shoot, shoot, shoot.’ But Freddy takes his time because he knows there’s a better play.”

Olausson has been even more productive in the last month. He has 16 points in his last 13 games. Much of that work has been on the power play.

“He’s shooting more,” Teemu Selanne said. “He has a great shot and he’s shown that the last 10 to 15 games.”

Said Olausson: “He may be right, I don’t know. It may be my dad talking to me out there, ‘Shoot the puck.’ It is tough not to pass [on the power play] when you have Teemu and Paul [Kariya] out there.”
