Gonzalez Does Reversal, Transfers to Moorpark

Cristobal Gonzalez, a state-champion wrestler for Ventura High last March, has transferred to Moorpark College after spending a redshirt season at Lassen College in Northern California.

Gonzalez, 56-3 as a senior, won at 189 pounds at the state meet in Stockton to become the region’s first state champion since 1985. He opted for Lassen, 80 miles north of Reno, Nev., but reconsidered in order to move closer to family, Coach Paul Keysaw of Moorpark said.

SWIMMING

Joel Schaeffer, swim coach at Reseda High for 29 years, has resigned.

Schaeffer, the longest tenured swim coach in the City Section, will continue to coach the Regents’ football team. He will be replaced by Joe Odom.

BASKETBALL

Anthony Naylor, a 6-foot-3 junior from Harvard-Westlake, will be sidelined indefinitely after re-injuring his shoulder.

BASEBALL

Former El Camino Real pitcher Randy Wolf, former Alemany infielder Andy Dominique and former Montclair Prep infielder Torey Lovullo are among 17 nonroster players invited to spring training with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Former Crespi High pitcher Keith Evans was invited to spring training with the Montreal Expos. Evans, a right-hander, was 13-11 between Class-A Jupiter and Double-A Harrisburg last season.

TENNIS

Khushchehr Italia, a senior who played on the Buckley High girls’ team last fall, graduated mid-year and joined Brigham Young’s tennis team.

Athletic Director Dan Gilmartin said the NCAA cleared Italia to play for BYU this spring.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Lancaster Desert Christian High girls’ team was even faster in the classroom than on the course.

Desert Christian, which finished third in the state among Division V teams in November, placed second among girls’ cross-country teams statewide with a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.9, the CIF announced.

Newbury Park was tied for third among boys’ teams with a GPA of 3.62. Newbury Park also was eighth among girls’ volleyball teams at 3.69. Royal was 10th at 3.66.

Other top 10 finishers were Crespi, sixth at 3.60 in boys’ cross-country, and Ventura, tied for ninth at 3.72 in girls’ cross-country.

Highland High will host a three-hour clinic Sunday titled, “Finding a College, a Team and a Scholarship for Your Athlete.” The featured speaker will be Catherine Aradi, recruiting columnist for Fastpitch World and Student Sports magazines and a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn.
