Oxnard District Reverses Field on Lombardo Transfer

From Staff Reports

The Oxnard Union School District has reversed itself and is trying to block the transfer of quarterback Chris Lombardo of St. Bonaventure High to Newbury Park.

Lombardo, a junior, was given his release by the Oxnard district on Dec. 15. The Conejo Valley Unified School District accepted him on Jan. 7.

But Rafael Gonzales, director of instructional support services for the Oxnard district, sent out a fax Thursday informing the Conejo Valley district that he is reversing his approval after questioning whether Lombardo’s transfer was for athletic reasons.

Lombardo, who lives in Camarillo, passed for 2,427 yards and 26 touchdowns last season at St. Bonaventure, a private school in Ventura.

He requested his release from the Oxnard district, where he lives, citing Newbury Park’s block academic schedule.

Kameelah Purdom of Canyons, who had a total of 36 points in two games, was picked women’s co-player of the week in the WSC.
