Edison’s 4th-Quarter Rally Hurts No. 10 Esperanza

For the second time in three games, Edison rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat a ranked opponent, this time nine points to defeat Esperanza, 45-43, in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Edison.

Freshman Bianca Ziemann’s basket with 1 minute 30 seconds remaining gave the second-ranked Chargers a two-point lead. Ziemann had five of her nine points in the fourth quarter. Michelle Zylstra scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds for Edison (15-4, 3-0).

Esperanza, ranked 10th, made only two of nine shots in the final quarter and missed its last five, enabling Edison to secure the victory with a 10-4 run. Kristin Peters scored eight for Esperanza (12-6, 2-1). Edison also defeated Marina with a fourth-quarter comeback last week.

In other Sunset League games:

Fountain Valley 51, Los Alamitos 44--Lindsay King scored 15 points to lead the Barons (6-13, 1-2). Teammates Natalie King had 11 points and Laura Williams had 10 points.

No. 3 Marina 53, Huntington Beach 40--Janette Redmond and Natalie Quinn hit back-to-back threes to start the third quarter and spark a 16-2 run for Marina. Leanne Lambert had 12 points, six assists and five steals and Nikki Lee scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds for Marina (17-2, 2-1). Melanie Cherney scored 15 points to lead Huntington Beach.

In the Academy League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 61, Downey Calvary Chapel 27--Bethany Thom led the Eagles (12-3, 4-0) with 33 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Teammate Melissa Sands contributed 20 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists.

In the Empire League:

Century 59, Cypress 47--Aprile Powell led all scorers with 28 points and Elizabeth Mendoza chipped in 15 for Century (15-3, 3-0). Lyndsey Weaver led Cypress with 19.

El Dorado 44, Kennedy 22--Carly Wade scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds and Sydney Patten scored seven and had 10 rebounds for El Dorado (13-6, 2-1), which held Kennedy to two points in the first and third quarters. Nicole Doi scored 10 points for Kennedy.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 49, Ontario Christian 37--Sophomore Monika Shulte had 15 points and six rebounds and junior Nicole Grady scored 14 points for host Orange Lutheran (8-8, 2-2).

In the Orange League:

No. 1 Brea Olinda 89, Valencia 40--Chelsea Trotter led the way for Brea Olinda (13-3, 2-0) with 20 points and 13 rebounds and teammates Lindsey Davidson had 15 points and Jackie Lord 14.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 54, Laguna Hills 44--Autumn Smith led Costa Mesa (12-6, 3-0) with a game-high 25 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Nancy Hatsushi contributed seven points and six assists, and Evelyn Powers scored 12 points. Shannon Owens scored 18 points for Laguna Hills (10-7, 2-1).

Estancia 62, Laguna Beach 47--Becky Lenhart made six three-pointers and scored 22 points to lead visiting Estancia (12-5, 2-1). Lenhart made four three-pointers and scored 14 points in the opening quarter.

In Sea View League girls’ basketball:

No. 6 El Toro 67, Santa Margarita 47--Giuliana Mendiola scored 31 points and Gioconda Mendiola had 21, including 18 in the first quarter, for El Toro (11-3, 3-0).

Woodbridge 51, Irvine 36--Kristi Frueh made all five field-goal attempts, including two three-pointers, and scored 14 points for visiting Woodbridge (10-7, 2-1).

In the South Coast League:

No. 5 San Clemente 65, Mission Viejo 50--Colleen Turnbull had 21 points and seven rebounds and Debby Caine had 15 points and seven assists for visiting San Clemente (14-6, 4-0).

No. 7 Mater Dei 57, Dana Hills 32--Kristin Hayman and Kristian Kirkpatrick each had 11 points for visiting Mater Dei (12-3, 3-1). Dana Hills is 14-5, 2-2.

Capistrano Valley 66, Trabuco Hills 33--Lindsay Peloza had 17 points and Sarah Flanagan added 12 for Capistrano Valley (7-11, 2-2).
