Foothill Scores Water Polo Victory

Daylene Coberly scored the winning goal off a pass from Jackie Pirro 45 seconds into overtime as Foothill defeated San Diego Mt. Carmel, 6-5, in a pool-play game at the Coronado tournament Saturday at Coronado High School.

Foothill’s Janelle Coberly scored to tie score, 5-5, and send it into overtime.

In an earlier pool-play game, Foothill was held to two goals and went down to defeat to host Coronado, 7-2. With the win, Coronado improved to 11-0.

Coberly and Pirro were both selected to the all-tournament team.

In Academy League boys’ basketball:

St. Margaret’s 102, Southern California Christian 34--Alex Huff had 37 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists for St. Margaret’s (8-5, 4-1).

Brian Sternberg had 21 points and nine assists for St. Margaret’s.

Southern California Christian only had three players score and was held to fewer than 10 points in three quarters, scoring eight in the first and seven in the third and fourth quarters.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Canyon 41, Ocean View 40--Neil Hammad scored 24 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Canyon at the Double Pump Shootout at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Canyon (11-6) outscored Ocean View (16-4), 19-6, in the fourth quarter to overcome a 12-point deficit.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Laguna Beach 2, San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea 2--Laguna Beach’s Kelly Hitzel scored in the closing seconds to tie the score. Kristen Anthony scored in the first half for the Artists.

In the Trojan Duels wrestling tournament:

Host University wins--University won all five of its matches to win its tournament. Santa Margarita placed second with four wins and one loss, and Saddleback third with four wins and one loss.

The Trojans’ Daniel Kang (121), Alberto Gamboa (147), and Francisco Gamboa (191) each won their weight class. All three were undefeated with five victories.
