Boller Chosen Player of the Year, Extending Hart Streak to 14 Years

Quarterback Kyle Boller of Hart High has been selected offensive player of the year in Southern Section Division III, making it 14 consecutive years a Hart quarterback has been chosen to an all-section team.

Linebacker Scott Hunt of Hart was chosen Division III co-defensive player of the year with John Lopez of St. Paul.

In Division IV, linebacker Anthony Foli of Newbury Park was selected defensive player of the year.

In Division XII, running back Michael Washington of Paraclete shared offensive player of the year with Robert De La Cruz of Cathedral. Defensive back Tommy Breech of Paraclete earned defensive player of the year.

All-section selections by coaches include Foli, Boller, wide receiver Jerry Owens of Hart, tight end Mike Seidman of Westlake, tight end Alex Holmes of Harvard-Westlake and defensive tackle Travis Johnson of Notre Dame.

Second-team picks include linemen Ben Smith of Littlerock and Paul Dolinsky of Hart, defensive back Joey Casillas of Thousand Oaks and defensive linemen Dennis Sobalvarro of Lancaster and Tom Larkin of Harvard-Westlake.

Mike Herrington of Hart was selected coach of the year in Division III, with Steve Hagerty of Paraclete chosen coach of the year in Division XII.

Herrington and his staff have been chosen to coach the California team against Texas in the Shrine All-Star Classic on June 26.

Brian Montesanto, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound defensive end from Royal, has committed to Arizona State. Montesanto is a two-time All-Ventura County choice by The Times.

Steve Racius, a 6-4, 225-pound tight end from Chaminade, has committed to Villanova. He’s the third Eagle football player to make a college choice.

Offensive lineman Antonio Sanchez and defensive back Corey Neal of Sylmar have committed to Fresno State but will not play next season because they have not qualified academically, Coach Jeff Engilman of Sylmar said.

Cornerback Donnell Day of Cal State Northridge will play for the North team in the Hula Bowl on Saturday.

Day had three interceptions last season, tying for third in the Big Sky Conference. He is the first Matador in the Hula Bowl.

BASKETBALL

Justin Beach of Moorpark College and Tony Hoggatts of Glendale were selected Western State Conference players of the week in the North and South divisions, respectively.

Beach, a freshman forward from Chaminade High, had 42 points and 17 rebounds in two games. Hoggatts, a sophomore guard, had 45 points and 10 assists in two games.

VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge is not ranked in the first American Volleyball Coaches Assn. men’s poll.

UCLA is ranked No. 1, followed by Lewis, Hawaii, Brigham Young and Pepperdine.

SOCCER

Jordan Sison, 13, of Chatsworth and Taylor Canel, 13, of Studio City have been selected to attend an Olympic Development national training camp in Idaho and try out for a 14-and-under junior team.
