Scouts’ Honor to Kapler

Gabe Kapler, former Taft High and Moorpark College outfielder, will be honored by the Professional Baseball Scouts of Southern California as minor league player of the year at a banquet Tuesday at Anaheim Stadium.

Also being honored is scout Dennis Lieberthal of the Detroit Tigers, who signed Kapler.

FOOTBALL

Bruce Molock, All-Golden League running back from Antelope Valley High, has narrowed his college choices to Idaho and Cal State Northridge.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior who rushed for 1,275 yards in nine games last season, expects to make a decision by next week.

TENNIS

Marissa Irvin of Stanford, 1997 Southern Section girls’ singles champion from Harvard-Westlake High, will play in the 22nd annual Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Feb. 4-7 in Dallas.

Paul Xanthos has come out of retirement to coach the men’s team at Pierce College.

Xanthos, a member of the NCAA Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame, returns to a position he held for 28 years before retiring in 1993. He replaces Aris Hovsepian, who left for personal reasons.

Xanthos was recently elected to the U.S. Professional Tennis Assn. Hall of Fame.
