Think of Them as (Be)coming Attractions

The Golden Globe Awards have become Hollywood’s dress rehearsal. Now that the ceremony is televised, they have become the high-fashion preamble for Oscar night. At the 56th annual ceremony of the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Sunday, stars of the big screen and small showed a renewed commitment to grand style--most of the time.

Big-ticket designer labels such as Giorgio Armani, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta and Valentino appeared on the best-dressed women and men. Jamie Lee Curtis, at left in an embroidered Pamela Dennis, liked to show off her camera-shaped purse.

The fleet of professional stylists, jewelers and makeup artists did their jobs well enough. The exceptions? Tuxedo jackets without bow ties and, worse, the tortuously tousled hair of Cameron Diaz, Jenna Elfman and Meg Ryan. They belong in the Hair by Ben Stiller Club.

The women’s beads, ball gowns and elegant trains were a glamorous, welcome counterpoint, helping to ensure that the stars’ style-makers get a gig come Oscar time.
