Jacobsen Shooting Toward State Record

The Glendora boys’ basketball program is likely to finish the season with the distinction of having produced the top three scorers in state history.

Casey Jacobsen, a 6-foot-6 senior, last week moved into second place on the all-time list, passing former Tartan standout Cameron Murray.

Jacobsen, who will play at Stanford next season, began this week with 2,898 points, 56 more than Murray, who played at Glendora from 1991-94 and now plays for Louisville.

Tracy Murray of the NBA’s Washington Wizards, Cameron’s brother, is the all-time leader with 3,053 points scored from 1987-89.

Jacobsen is averaging 30.6 points a game this season for the defending Division I-A champions and is expected to break Tracy Murray’s record in the final week of the regular season. He has averaged 25.5 points in his four-year varsity career.

Some of the top boys’ basketball teams in the Southland will participate in the four-game SoCal Basketball Classic on Saturday at Los Angeles Southwest College.

The schedule:

3 p.m.--Santa Ana Mater Dei vs. Anaheim Canyon.

4:30 p.m.--Verbum Dei vs. Pasadena.

6 p.m.--Lakewood Artesia vs. Compton.

7:30 p.m.--Long Beach Poly vs. Compton Dominguez.

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, the La Verne Damien boys and the Mission Viejo Capistrano girls top the Southern Section polls in Division I.

In other boys’ divisions, Irvine Woodbridge is No. 1 in Division II, Cathedral City is top-ranked in Division III, Anaheim Servite is No. 1 in Division IV and Orange Lutheran is the top-ranked team in Division V.

In other girls’ divisions, the top-ranked teams are Westlake in Division II, South Torrance in Division III, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake in IV and Ventura St. Bonaventure in V.
