Newbury Park Defense Does It
Behind a stifling, ever-changing defense, Newbury Park High outscored Simi Valley by 19 points in the second quarter and went on to a 64-41 upset Friday night in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.
It was the second consecutive loss for Simi Valley (16-6, 5-3 in league play), ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times.
Newbury Park (10-9, 4-4), which led, 33-10, at halftime, used multiple defenses against Simi Valley, which scored one point in the decisive second quarter.
“I don’t think [Simi Valley] knew what we were running,” Coach Nori Parvin of Newbury Park said.
“I told [my players] before the game, defense would be the key.”
Jamie Dirksing scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds for the Panthers. Angela Jensen scored 11.
Simi Valley made only 15 of 31 free throws. Newbury Park was 21 of 31.
Moorpark 70, Thousand Oaks 41--Damaris Hinojosa had 30 points, 16 rebounds, nine steals, seven assists and five blocked shots for the Musketeers (18-1, 8-0) in a Marmonte League victory at Moorpark.
Thousand Oaks (11-9, 3-5) was outrebounded by No. 8-ranked Moorpark (18-1, 8-0).
Muir 75, Crescenta Valley 68--Sinnamonn Garrett had 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, but the second-ranked Falcons (18-4, 5-1) saw their 37-game Pacific League winning streak snapped at Muir.
Crescenta Valley held 14-point halftime lead, but Muir (13-9, 5-1) tied the game at 60 behind the play of April DeJohnette, who scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half.
North Hollywood 66, Monroe 58--Tashean Thomas scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half and the Huskies pulled away in a Mid-Valley League game at North Hollywood.
Markia Derby had 22 points and seven rebounds, and Richelle Sherman added 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Huskies (16-5, 6-0), ranked No. 8.
Rasheeda Grey and Maral Karaccusian each scored 15 points and Shakarria Jones had 12 points and seven assists for Monroe (8-10, 4-2), but the Vikings were hurt when Grey fouled out with six minutes to play.
El Camino Real 69, Taft 45--Christina Aguinaga, Karen Shun and Cara Blumfield combined for 37 points in the second half and the No. 10 Conquistadores outscored the Toreadors, 45-20, in the last two quarters of a West Valley League game at El Camino Real.
Aguinaga scored 20 points, Shun had 18 and Blumfield added 16 for El Camino Real, which broke a first-place tie with Taft.
Chatsworth 65, Kennedy 61--Pam Clark and Liz Sun each scored 14 points, including four each in overtime for the Chancellors in a West Valley League game at Chatsworth.
Chatsworth (12-9, 4-2) made five of six free throws and outscored Kennedy, 11-7, in overtime.
Ashley Shelton had 13 points for the Chancellors.
Grant 73, Van Nuys 23--Kathleen Mallon scored 10 of her 12 points in a 27-point second quarter for the Lancers (14-7, 6-0), who won for the eighth consecutive time in a Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys.
Krystal Clay had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Leslie Mui hit three three-point shots and scored 14 points for Grant.
Granada Hills 59, Birmingham 56--Niloo Bavarian hit a three-point shot with nine seconds left to give the Highlanders a North Valley League victory at Granada Hills.
Kelly Patterson scored 34 points for Granada Hills (7-9, 2-4), making 16 of 18 free throws.
