SuperSonics Send Maggette to the Magic
The Orlando Magic began a major overhaul of its roster Wednesday night, trading forward Horace Grant to the Seattle SuperSonics for the draft rights to Corey Maggette.
Maggette, who left Duke after his freshman season, was considered one of the best athletes available in this year’s draft. He slipped to Seattle’s pick at 13th overall, but the Magic feels he has the potential to be a player it can build around.
To make the deal work under salary cap rules, the Magic also obtained veterans Dale Ellis, Billy Owens and Don MacLean. In addition to Grant, Seattle received second-round draft picks in 2000 and 2001.
Also on Wednesday:
* Atlanta traded the rights to first-round pick Jumaine Jones to Philadelphia for a future first-round pick and traded the rights to second-round pick Roberto Bergersen (No. 52) to Portland for cash.
* Golden State traded the rights to first-round pick Jeff Foster to Indiana for the rights to first-round pick Vonteego Cummings and a future first-round selection.
* Minnesota traded the rights to second-round pick Louis Bullock to Orlando for cash.
* San Antonio traded the rights to first-round pick Leon Smith to Dallas for the rights to second-round pick Gordon Giricek and a future second-round selection.
