About 50,000 people flocked to the coastal community Sunday to celebrate the Fourth of July, but there were no major incidents thanks to beefed-up security downtown and along the beach, police said Monday.

Tactical units patrolled the area to mediate potential problems before they escalated into the type of violence and melees that occurred in the mid-1990s, when drunken revelers started minor fires and pelted police with firecrackers.

Police on Sunday did arrest 56 adults for public drunkenness, petty theft and on outstanding warrants. Last year, police arrested 106 people at the annual Fourth of July celebration.
