Five people were injured, one woman seriously, in separate crashes that occurred within an hour of each other Tuesday afternoon on California 126, authorities said.

The crashes forced the closure of the highway at both accident scenes for more than 30 minutes and caused major traffic backups, authorities said.

The first crash occurred about 3 p.m. when Gayne L. Burke, 76, lost control of the Chevrolet Suburban he was driving and slammed head-on into the end of a guardrail near Camulos Ranch east of Piru, California Highway Patrol Officer Kitty White said.

The vehicle slid down an embankment, rolled over at least once and came to rest upright against a tree about 100 feet from the roadway, county Fire Capt. Gary Rake said.

In a second incident an hour later, a car crashed south of Kimball Road in Ventura, White said.
