WORLD CUP NOTES
Women’s World Cup executives estimate they will turn a $1-million to $2-million profit on a tournament that, only a few weeks ago, was considered a break-even affair at best.
The organizing committee said profits might have been even greater, but money was poured back into staging Saturday’s final. An interview tent was constructed outside the Rose Bowl to accommodate hundreds of credentialed journalists. The entertainment budget was enlarged to book pop star Jennifer Lopez for the closing ceremonies.
“We were selling so many tickets,” a spokesman explained. “We said, ‘Let’s go after a hot name.’ ”
