Fillmore of Master’s on All-American Team

Junior center fielder Kurt Fillmore was selected NAIA All-American, the first player in Master’s College history to make the first team.

Fillmore batted .394 and set school single-season records with 76 runs, 52 stolen bases, 11 hit-by-pitches, 53 walks and a .597 on-base percentage for the Mustangs (37-14).

Senior catcher Aaron Penberthy was named to the second team and junior third baseman Rob Avila received honorable mention.

* Outfielder Michael Falco of Agoura High has been selected the player of the year in the Marmonte League, with Tyler Johnson of Newbury Park chosen pitcher of the year.

Falco batted .565 with 14 home runs and 43 runs batted in. Johnson was 6-5 with a 3.86 earned-run average.

* Pitcher Jordan Olson and infielder Mark McCauley of Crescenta Valley were selected to play June 22-27 in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars in Orlando, Fla.

* Infielder Zachary Gordon of Moorpark College has signed with Oregon State.

Gordon from Royal High, batted .356 with 18 home runs this season.

Pitcher Jake Kor of Moorpark has signed with Lewis and Clark.

BASKETBALL

* The Ventura County Basketball Coaches’ All-Star Games are scheduled for Saturday at Ventura High.

The boys’ game is set for 8 p.m., with Tom McCollum of Hueneme coaching the North and Steve Johnson of Newbury Park directing the South.

The girls’ game, set for 6 p.m., will have Nick Purdue of St. Bonaventure coaching the North and Ollie Otis of Agoura coaching the South.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

BOXING

* Robert Garcia of Oxnard will make his third defense of the International Boxing Federation junior-lightweight title against Derrick “Smoke” Gainer on Saturday at Biloxi, Miss. The fight is on the undercard of a light-heavyweight bout between Roy Jones Jr. and Reggie Johnson and will be televised on HBO.

SOFTBALL

* The West Valley girls’ Royal team won the 16-and-under West Covina Memorial Day tournament.

Third baseman Christina Jordt of Louisville and pitcher Madalyn Dickerson of El Camino Real led the team to victory.

VOLLEYBALL

* Middle blocker Jose Sanchez and setter James Taruc, both of Monroe High, were selected the co-players of the year in the Mid-Valley League.

SOCCER

* Fullback Brian Phillips of Diamond Bar High has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

TENNIS

* Brooke Borisoff, a sophomore from Agoura High, defeated Iris Ichim of Beverly Hills, 6-7 (7-1), 6-1, 6-2, to win the girls’ 16 division of the Quiksilver/Roxy National Junior Open at Thousand Oaks Racquet Club.

Rylan Rizza of Palos Verdes beat Quinn Borchard, a junior at Rio Mesa High, 6-2, 6-7 (8-6), 6-3, in the boys’ 16 final.

In other girls’ matches, Lindsey Nelson of Orange beat Erica Sauer of Somis, 6-2, 5-7, 3-0 (retired), in the 14s final, and Kelly Schmandt of Santa Barbara downed Tiffany Brymer, formerly of Rio Mesa, 6-4, 6-3, in the 18s final.

In other boys’ matches, Ryan Redondo of Ojai beat Michael Calkins of Portland, Ore., 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to win the 18s division; Justin Montgomery of Channel Islands Harbor defeated Eric Riley of Rancho Santa Fe, 6-2, 6-2 to win 14s; and Samuel Tadevosian of Glendale won the 12s division by beating Carsten Ball of Newport Beach, 6-2, 6-0.

VOLLEYBALL

* Courtney Guerra and Teresa Russell of Royal High will lead the East team in the seventh annual Ventura County East-West All-Star girls’ match Friday at 7 p.m. at Moorpark College.

The boys’ match will follow at 8 p.m.
