Navy Will Pay County to Keep Base Maintained
- Share via
The Navy will pay Orange County $4.5 million a year to oversee El Toro Marine Corps Air Station after the military leaves next month.
The agreement signed Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors is another step in the process of turning over the 4,700-acre base to local authorities. Last week, supervisors approved a temporary lease that will allow uninterrupted use of the base golf course, horse stables, day-care center and pool after July 2.
The county’s base-management consultant will take over maintenance duties on the rest of the base, including security patrols.
County officials hope to sign a master lease with the Navy by December so the county can lease base facilities, including the airfield for cargo flights.
