Southern Section Champion Hurdler Signs With Titans

Simeon Rogers has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Fullerton, Titan hurdles coach Chris Asher said Friday.

Rogers, from Victor Valley High in Victorville, won this year’s Southern Section Division II championship in the 300-meter hurdles.

SOCCER

* Nicole Price, a 1997 graduate of Edison High, will play women’s soccer next season at Vanguard University, formerly known as Southern California College, Coach Scott Dameron announced.

Price, a defender, played at Pepperdine last year.

Dameron also announced the signings of freshmen Alexsis Newbold (El Toro High), Elizabeth Hastings (Capistrano Valley) and Jenny Roquemore (Edison).

* Former Zodiac player Mike Matson was named girls’ soccer coach at Northwood High, Athletic Director Rick Curtis said. Matson played for the Zodiac, Fresno State and Lakewood Artesia High.

SOFTBALL

* Seven SCC players have been named to the All-NAIA Far West Region team.

Gretchen Brandt, a senior pitcher, Alicia Groshon (Sr., IF), Gina Liebengood (Fr., P), Michelle Murie (Sr., C), Noelle Sturgill (Sr., IF), Valerie Vanaken (Jr., IF) and Chrissy Vega (Sr., OF) were all on the 20-player team.

Leslie Graves, a junior infielder from Hope International, was also selected.

* Corona del Mar named Terry Cristiano as its softball coach, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said.

VOLLEYBALL

* Karch Kiraly of San Clemente and Adam Johnson of Laguna Beach advanced to the quarterfinals with a 15-10 victory over Sinjin Smith and Rob Heidger in the FIVB Labatt Blue Toronto Open beach volleyball tournament in Toronto Friday. Dain Blanton (Laguna Beach High) and Eric Fonoimoana were eliminated.

In the women’s tournament, Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs (El Toro High), who won the Hermosa Beach tournament last weekend, lost two matches and were eliminated. Linda Hanley (Laguna Beach High) and Gabrielle Reece were also eliminated.

* Chris Cole was named boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach at Northwood, Athletic Director Rick Curtis said. Cole coached the junior varsity at Long Beach Millikan last season.

TENNIS

* John Cappello, the No. 1 singles player at Saddleback College, has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Gaucho Coach Bill Otta said.

Cappello, from Corona del Mar High, was 27-4 in singles last season and was the Orange Empire Conference’s player of the year.
