Nguyen Ousted at Southern California Junior Tennis Championships

Kim-Anh Nguyen of Santa Ana, 12th seeded in the girls’ 18-year-old division, was upset by Yasmin Fisher of Ventura, 6-4, 7-6, in the Southern California Junior tennis championships Wednesday at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Nguyen, 15, won the girls’ 16 division at Ojai in April and was playing in the 18s for the first time.

In another girls’ 18s match, Audra Adams of Newport Beach upset No. 8-seeded Kelly Schmandt of Santa Barbara, 6-4, 6-2.

Javier Carillo of Mission Viejo posted the biggest upset in the boys’ 18s by defeating seventh-seeded Quinn Borchard of Camarillo, 6-4, 6-3.

In boys’ 16s, Cameron Ball of Newport Beach defeated 10th-seeded Dustin Tsu of San Marino, 6-2, 6-2, and Brian Morton of Costa Mesa upset eighth-seeded Lester Cook of Woodland Hills, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6.

HIGH SCHOOLS

* Paul Renfrow, veteran baseball coach at Marina High, has been appointed boys’ athletic director. Renfrow replaces Larry Doyle, who died of cancer in May. Renfrow said he would remain as Viking baseball coach.

Renfrow said softball Coach Shelly Luth will continue as interim girls’ athletic director while Principal Carol Osbrink decides to hire a full-time replacement or assign that role to Renfrow. Doyle held both positions the last seven years.

Renfrow also said Dave Sanford has been hired to replace Gay Van Wey as boys’ and girls’ cross-country coach and also will be an assistant track coach. Sanford previously coached cross-country and track at Cerritos High.

SOCCER

* Scott Dameron has been named the boys’ soccer coach at Corona del Mar. Dameron, the women’s soccer coach at Southern California College, was an assistant at Aliso Niguel.

* All 21 California-South teams advanced to the quarterfinals in the Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championship in Bakersfield and San Bernardino, combining for a 61-2 record in the 243-team tournament.

The Mission Viejo Mirage (under-18 girls), Southern California Blues of San Juan Capistrano (under-17 girls and under-14 girls) and NHB of Huntington Beach (under-13 boys) all posted victories Wednesday. The quarterfinals begin today.

JUDO

* More than 1,200 American and international athletes are expected to compete July 3-4 at the sixth U.S. Judo Federation’s Junior, Youth, Team and Kata National Championships at the Bren Center.

Individual competition for boys’ and girls’ 7-12 years old begins July 3 following the 9 a.m. opening ceremony. Individual and team competition begins at 9:30 a.m. on July 4 for boys’ and girls’ 13-20. Competition both days ends about 6 p.m.

Kata competition takes place 2 p.m., July 2, at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine.
