Higgins, Hartman Chosen All-Big Sky in Basketball

Derrick Higgins of Cal State Northridge and Jason Hartman of Portland State, from Thousand Oaks High, have been selected to the All-Big Sky Conference basketball team by conference coaches.

Higgins, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, averages 14 points and is five steals shy of breaking his Northridge single-season record of 74 set in the 1996-97 season. Last year he missed all but five games, including the entire conference season, because of a broken foot.

Hartman, a 6-7 senior forward, was one of three unanimous picks. The others were forward Harold Arceneaux of Weber State, the Big Sky most valuable player, and center Nate Holmstadt of Montana State.

The conference MVP has come from the regular-season champion every year this decade.

Brian Heinle, a sophomore center for Northridge, received honorable mention.

Forward Elizabeth Hansell of The Master’s College, who averages 19.7 points and 9.2 rebounds, was chosen NAIA Far West Region Independents player of the year.

Joining her on the all-region team are teammates Sara Scheffer and Karen Gormley, who helped the Mustangs (27-4) set a school record for victories in one season.

Joey Penberthy, Todd Whittington and Joclin Julmist of the Master’s were selected to the all-region men’s team.
