Soccer Championship Format Shifts to Two Sites, One Day

Share

The Southern Section has changed its format this year for the boys’ and girls’ soccer championships.

Instead of two days of championship games at one site, finals in all divisions will be played Saturday at Cerritos Gahr and La Mirada.

The boys will still compete for five division titles. One division has been added in the girls’ competition for a total of five.

The committee that chooses the McDonald’s High School All-American team had some Egg McMuffin on its face after overlooking Glendora’s Casey Jacobsen.

When the team was announced early last week, Jason Kapono of Lakewood Artesia was the only Californian named to the 20-member team.

But the national groundswell of opinion regarding the absence of Jacobsen, who is 128 points away from becoming the state’s all-time leading scorer, was so overwhelming, the Stanford-bound senior was named to the team. NBA players Sam Perkins and Chris Mullin were added to the team during their senior years in high school because of similar oversights.
