Harvard-Westlake Plays for Title Friday

Harvard-Westlake High will play Morningside for the Southern Section Division III-A girls’ basketball title at 4:45 p.m. Friday at The Pyramid in Long Beach, it was announced Wednesday.

In girls’ soccer, Chaminade will play Bishop Montgomery for the Division IV championship at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cerritos Gahr High. At 4 p.m. on Saturday, Hart will play Irvine Woodbridge for the Division II championship at La Mirada High.

BASKETBALL

Brett Michel, Rafael Berumen and Branduinn Fullove of Simi Valley High have been selected Marmonte League tri-players of the year in basketball.

All-league choices include Todd Tomlinson of Moorpark, Shaun Michel of Simi Valley, Brian Bobik of Newbury Park, Brian Polen of Newbury Park and Garrett Lepisto of Agoura.

Kent Dennis of Cleveland High has been selected West Valley League player of the year. The senior guard led the Cavaliers to a 10-0 league record and to the City Championship quarterfinals.

The Master’s College men’s and women’s teams are playing this weekend in the NAIA Far West Region Independents tournaments.

The women, who had a school-record 27 victories in 31 games, meets Schreiner College (Texas) in a semifinal Friday night at 7:30 at Master’s.

The men have a first-round bye. The Mustangs (20-12) will play in the region final Saturday night at 7:30 at Biola against the winner of the Christian Heritage-East Texas Baptist semifinal game.

FOOTBALL

Jason Blatt, who coached the defensive line at University of San Diego last season, has been hired as defensive coordinator at defending City champion Taft.

Blatt, who played at Montclair Prep and Colorado, previously coached the defense at Santa Monica College. He replaces Frank Grossman, who resigned to pursue a master’s degree.

BASEBALL

J.T. Stotts, freshman shortstop at Cal State Northridge, is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season after a pin was placed in his foot for a broken bone sustained last month while running the bases against Oregon State, Coach Mike Batesole said.

WATER POLO

Senior Kiley Grombacher and sophomore Paloma Slezak established school records this season for Louisville High.

Grombacher had 127 steals. Slezak had 70 goals. They share the record for assists with 41.

SOFTBALL

Open tryouts for the Thousand Oaks-based Southern California Diamonds’ 16-and-under team are being held on Sundays.

SOCCER

Blu Murray of Notre Dame High has been selected to play in a high school boys’ all-star game Sunday at Monrovia High.

The West Valley youth club will hold tryouts Saturday and Sunday for players in the under-10 through under-14 divisions.
