Scrappy Garfinkel Reaches State Wrestling Semifinals

John Garfinkel of Highland High won his first three matches at 160 pounds Friday to advance to the semifinals of the state wrestling championships at University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Garfield defeated Ricky Seymour of Pleasanton Amador Valley, 6-1, in the first round, before winning decisions over Brent Volenski of Paradise, 7-2, and Westley Tielens of Carlsbad, 15-3. He will face Brett Schuman of Lompoc Cabrillo in a semifinal today.

Rick Aguirre of San Fernando (103 pounds), Trevor Clocherty of Ventura (141), Tiloi Tuitama of Hueneme (171 pounds) and Arthur Bryan of Monroe (215) each went 2-1 and have the opportunity to wrestle for third place.

Tuitama defeated Anthony Thomas of El Camino Real, 7-4, in a first-round match.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Crescenta Valley 132, Alhambra 22--William Ban qualified for the Southern Section championships with his winning times in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly for the Falcons (2-0) in a nonleague victory at Crescenta Valley.

Ban clocked 2:03.18 in the 200 IM and 54.99 in the 100 butterfly.

Travis Taylor also had a qualifying time in the 200 IM, and Kenny Carpenter qualified for the section meet with a winning time of 22.45 in the 50 freestyle.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Crescenta Valley 101, Alhambra 54--Shelley Stiles qualified for the Southern Section championships with a winning time of 1:11.84 in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Falcons (2-0) in a nonleague victory at Crescenta Valley.

BOYS’ GOLF

Flintridge Prep 204, Maranatha 231--Sophomore Jeff Osborn had two birdies and seven pars while shooting two-under-par 33 for visiting Flintridge Prep (2-1) in a nonleague match at Eaton Canyon golf course.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian d. Cathedral, 15-11, 12-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-11--Nick Manghelli had 11 of his 21 kills in the final two games to help the Crusaders (2-1) to a nonleague victory at Cathedral.

Josh Seffel had 19 kills and five blocks for Village Christian.

St. Francis d. La Canada, 7-15, 15-8, 15-11, 16-14--Tony Sciarra had 13 kills and five blocks to help the Golden Knights (3-0) to a nonleague victory at La Canada.

Thousand Oaks d. Crespi 15-5, 15-11, 16-14--Shane Judd had 13 kills and five blocks for the Lancers (2-0) in a nonleague match against Crespi (2-1) at Thousand Oaks.
