The Master’s 87, Christian Heritage 77--Joey Penberthy scored 30 points and the Mustangs (21-12) earned a berth in the NAIA national tournament with a Far West regional victory at Master’s.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 89, San Diego Mesa 73--Maricela Rodriguez had 26 points and eight rebounds to lead the 13th-seeded Monarchs over fifth-seeded Mesa in a Southern California regional final at San Diego.

Valley (23-13) enters the state tournament Thursday against top-seeded Sierra at Concordia University in Irvine.

East Texas Baptist 96, The Master’s 81--Elizabeth Hansell had 26 points and Reesie Gorman scored 16 for the Mustangs, who had a 16-game winning streak broken in the NAIA Far West Region Independent tournament final at Biola University.

Master’s (28-5) will learn March 11 if it receives an at-large berth to the national tournament.

BASEBALL

Cal State Northridge 21, San Francisco 11--Sophomore Eric Horvat went four for four with two home runs and six runs batted in for the Matadors in a nonconference game at San Francisco.

Northridge (13-13) had 19 hits, with Danny Phillips hitting his 11th home run of the season and freshman Jason Gorman getting his third home run.

Glendale 3, Santa Barbara 1--Doug Slaten (2-2) and Anthony Fabrizio combined on a three-hitter for Glendale (8-11, 2-1) in a Western State Conference interdivision game at Santa Barbara.

SOFTBALL

Arizona State 3-5, CS Northridge 2-0--Tara Glaister (4-3) pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts in the first game and Marisa Ornelas had three hits in the second game but the Matadors (7-6) were swept in a doubleheader at Arizona State (17-3).

Pierce 2-7, East L.A. 0-3--Earla Nicholson had three hits for the Brahmas (5-6) in a nonconference doubleheader sweep at Pierce.

TRACK AND FIELD

NCAA indoor championships--Clinte Motely of Cal State Northridge placed 11th in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 51-0 3/4 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
