OLYMPIC LEAGUE

Share

* Brethren Christian: 2-16, 1-9 in 1998. Coach: Mike Davis (first year). Prospects: Only two returning starters are back, senior infielder Elizabeth Fisher and pitcher Ja’Nene Hall. The Warriors will try to rebuild from the bottom, counting on their freshmen, power-hitting infielder Danielle Hall, pitcher/infielder Michelle Beatty, utility player Laura Warrick and pitcher/catcher Jordanna Armeson.

* Calvary Chapel: 23-4, 10-0 in 1998. Coach: Rose Imbriano (fourth year, 69-13). Prospects: The Eagles practically breezed to the section title, playing only one one-run game--beating league rival Orange Lutheran in the title game. The Eagles outscored five playoff opponents, 27-2, and are the league’s best hitting team this season despite the loss of player of the year Christy Ring. And they have 10 players returning, including two All-Division V players, senior first baseman Amanda Hallaway (.475, 22 runs, 33 RBIs) and senior outfielder Anna Jones (.435, 29 runs, 22 RBIs), and all-league first-teamer Sarah Hughes (11-2), a junior pitcher. Third baseman Kori Przygocki and outfielder Lindsey Stice (.306) were second-team all-league choices.

* Cerritos Valley Christian: 6-9, 4-6 in 1998. Coach: Gene Bras (second year, 6-9). Prospects: Last year’s youth should pay off for the Crusaders this season with nine starters returning, chief among them pitcher Tracey Halma, and sisters Alison and Andrea Smidt. Alison is a senior designated hitter/outfielder who batted .314, and Andrea is a sophomore who hit two home runs. Alison Smidt and Halma were first team all-league players.

* Sierra Madre Maranatha: 7-12, 4-4 in 1998. Coach: Barbara Ireland (ninth year, 70-91). Prospects: The Minutemen took third in the Alpha League last season. Senior Melissa Larew provides experienced pitching, and three freshmen in key positions should help: shortstop Heather Heal, outfielder/shortstop Ashley Kennedy, and catcher Jennifer Nava. Senior third baseman Tory Lathrop also provides some infield stability.

* Ontario Christian: 5-17, 2-8 in 1998. Coach: David Smith (second year, 5-17). Prospects: The senior battery, pitcher Mandy Tillema and catcher Melissa Bernel, return to the starting lineup as Ontario Christian tries to reduce its 35 errors in the infield. Junior Hallie Nancey, a first baseman from Chino, is a Division I college prospect and should have a huge impact on the offense and in the infield.

* Orange Lutheran: 20-11, 7-3 in 1998. Coach: Steve Miklos (second year, 20-11). Prospects: The Lancers, section finalists in Division V last year, have the misfortune of playing in the same league as Calvary Chapel. They’ll try to add a league title to their resume with eight returning starters, including pitchers Jessica Edwards, a junior who went 13-7 with a 0.76 ERA and produced 244 strikeouts in 133 innings, and sophomore Laura Miklos (7-3, 1.82), who batted .382. They give the Lancers the league’s best pitchers. The infield returns intact except first base. Sophomore catcher Nicole Sandberg (.318) and senior second baseman Jenny Miklos (.274) were first-team all-league players. Outfielder Cassie Leasure (.296) also returns, and Kimmy Miklos could start at catcher or designated hitter.

* Whittier Christian: 12-14, 6-4 in 1998. Coach: Gary Guy (fifth year, 42-51). Prospects: The Heralds’ strength is their pitchers, senior Celina Camarillo (8-9, 1.53) and sophomore Jennifer Benavidez (4-5, 2.04). To be successful, the defense must play well. Among its five returning starters, Camarillo (.368, 16 RBIs) and outfielder Melissa Villa (.213) are the only ones batting over .200.
