Monroe Stands Tall With Loveria’s Help

Razell Loveria had 14 kills and five blocks to carry Monroe High past Taft, 15-9, 2-15, 15-12, 13-15, 15-10, on Tuesday in a nonleague boys’ volleyball match at Taft (1-1).

Loveria made several big hits to spark an 8-2 outburst in the final game.

Monroe (2-0), defending City Section 3-A Division champion, starts only one player taller than 5 feet 10.

Jose Sanchez, Monroe’s tallest player at 6-5, had 14 blocks and Duke Ta had 11 kills and six blocks.

In other boys’ volleyball matches:

Granada Hills def. Fairfax, 15-1, 15-1, 15-7--Mike Aleman had six kills for the Highlanders Hills (2-0) in a nonconference victory at Fairfax to give Coach Tom Harp the 200th victory of his career.

Littlerock def. Valencia, 15-9, 17-15, 15-10--Chris Gorny had 25 kills for the Lobos, (2-0) in a nonleague victory at Valencia.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Ventura 10, Valley 2--David Turner (4-3) pitched a six-hitter, striking out 12 and walking two for the Pirates in a Western State Conference interdivisional victory at Ventura.

Nick Gontmaher had three hits, two runs batted in and scored a run for Ventura (8-7, 1-2).

Canyons 9, Moorpark 8--The Cougars scored the tying and go-ahead runs on wild pitches in the eighth inning in a WSC interdivisional game at Canyons.

Sergio Franco had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for Canyons (8-12, 2-2). Shaun Fishman added a home run, a single and two RBIs.

Rick Stockton had four hits, including a double, and three RBIs for Moorpark (14-9, 3-1).

Pierce 10, Santa Barbara 3--Traviss Hodge struck out eight and walked two in eight innings for the Brahmas (9-6, 2-2) in a WSC interdivisional victory at Santa Barbara.

Ryan West of Pierce had three hits, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

El Camino Real 11, Montclair Prep 0--Ashley Redlin pitched a no-hitter, striking out 11, and hit a three-run home run for the Conquistadores (3-1) in a nonleague game at El Camino Real.

Calabasas 7, Harvard-Westlake 0--Amy Rosson (2-0) pitched a three-hitter in a nonleague game at Calabasas.

Crescenta Valley 3, Canyon 0--Meredith Cervenka pitched a no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one in a nonleague game at Crescenta Valley (3-0).

BOYS’ TENNIS

Harvard-Westlake 9, Crespi 9--Sophomore Prakash Amritraj swept at No. 1 singles, including a 6-3 victory over his freshman cousin, Stephen Amritraj, to help the Wolverines (4-0, 1-0) win a Mission League match on games, 78-69, at Braemar Country Club.
