Esperanza’s Lloyd Will Play Tennis at Arizona

Esperanza senior Tom Lloyd has committed to play tennis at Arizona, his father, Hank, said. Lloyd is not playing high school tennis this year. Lloyd, who played junior tournaments last summer, is ranked fifth in Southern California in the boys’ 18s and is ranked among the top 20 nationally.

Woodbridge’s David Lingman, another nationally ranked player, has committed to Harvard. Lingman, who began the junior season ranked among the top five in Southern California, chose Harvard over Pepperdine.

Justin Fassnacht of Marina signed with California to play water polo, Marina Coach Dave Carlson said Tuesday. Fassnacht scored 125 goals this season to pass Tom Ward’s school record of 120 set in 1986. Fassnacht made first-team all-Southern Section and first-team all-Sunset League last season.

Fassnacht’s teammate Jeff Larson, the Division II Southern Section player of the year, committed to USC, Carlson said. Larson had 113 goals this season, 60 assists and 149 steals. Larson is Marina’s all-time leading scorer.

Santa Ana College offensive tackle Tait Afualo has signed to play football at Eastern Kentucky and his teammate, defensive end/linebacker Rick Hewitson, has signed with Olivet Nazarene in Kankakee, Ill., Don Coach Dave Ogas announced.

Afualo, 6 feet 6 and 315 pounds, was a second-team All-Mission Conference Central Division pick. Hewitson (6-2, 255), who played at Mater Dei, had five sacks last season. Olivet Nazarene lost to Azusa Pacific in the NAIA Division I championship in 1998.

The baseball coaches at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Long Beach will headline the monthly sports newsmakers luncheon Tuesday at the Pond.

George Horton of Fullerton and Dave Snow of Long Beach both have their teams ranked among the best in the country. The teams will play each other April 9-11 at Long Beach.

Brian Hayward, analyst on Mighty Ducks’ telecasts, will also speak. The luncheon starts at noon. Cost is $15 or $20 at the door. Call (714) 758-0222.

Marina Principal Carol Osbrink and longtime La Habra Coach Tex Wallis have been inducted into the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches’ Assn. Hall of Fame.

Osbrink spent 13 years as girls’ coach at L.A. Franklin and Temple City high schools during the formative years of girls’ sports in the section. She had a record of 163-59 from 1977 to 1986 at Temple City and won nine league titles.

Wallis, whose overall record was 658-300, began his coaching career in New Mexico in 1950, and from 1958 to 1985 was the boys’ basketball Coach at La Habra, winning 18 league titles. From 1976 to 1980 he also served as La Habra’s girls’ basketball coach.
