Northridge Falls Short in DeBiase’s First Defeat

Pitcher Jim DeBiase of Cal State Northridge ran into trouble on Tuesday.

The Matadors followed.

DeBiase lost his first decision of the season against the University of San Diego, 4-0, in a nonconference baseball game at San Diego.

DeBiase (6-1) allowed nine hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

San Diego (12-11) scored three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Four pitchers combined on a five-hitter for the Toreros.

Daryl Grant had three hits for Northridge (17-14).

Pierce 5, Bakersfield 0--Traviss Hodge pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and three walks for the Brahmas (11-7, 4-3) in a Western State Conference South Division victory at Pierce.

Center fielder Covelli Crisp drove in three runs with two hits, including a two-run home run.

Canyons 6, Valley 4--Chris Coash hit a three-run homer to highlight a five-run sixth for the Cougars (10-13, 4-3) in a WSC South Division game at Canyons.

Canyons hit four home runs, including three in the sixth.

Cuesta 13, Ventura 6--Aaron Dickson had four hits for the Pirates (9-9, 2-4) against Cuesta (18-3, 6-0), ranked No. 4 in the state, in a WSC North Division game at Cuesta.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Matador Golf Classic--Kim Kelly of Cal State Northridge shot a seven-over-par 80 to tie for third place and the Matadors defeated Cal State Sacramento in a playoff to win their own tournament at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc.

Kelley Carlson of Northridge shot an 84 and tied for eighth.
