Power Surge by Hart Shocks Saugus, 11-1

Hart High hit four home runs, including a first-inning grand slam by Jamie Shields, and routed Saugus, 11-1, in a Foothill League baseball game called in the fifth inning Friday at Hart.

Hart (6-1, 2-0 in league play), No. 6 in The Times’ regional poll, had six hits, all for extra bases.

“Short and ugly today,” Coach Doug Worley of Saugus said.

Two batters after Shields’ opposite-field home run off Brian Devita (0-2), Marke Horvat launched a two-run homer off Kurt De Maio to give the Indians a 6-0 lead.

Shields’ two-run double in the second extended Hart’s lead to 8-1.

In the fifth, Matt Friedrichsen’s solo home run and Brandon Montemayor’s two-run homer ended the game.

“We have a lot of powerful hitters on this team,” Shields said. “If we play like we did today, we should be just fine.”

De Maio struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings, including the side in order in the third--all on called third strikes. He also struck out the side in the second.

Saugus (4-3, 1-1) mustered only three hits off Justin Wiley (2-0), who struck out five in five innings.

The Centurions scored in the second inning on a bloop single by Nathan Steele that drove in Ryan Jossett from second. Jossett had two hits, including a double.

Chaminade 17, Loyola 6--Spencer Gordon hit two-run home runs in the third and fourth innings of a Mission League victory for the Eagles called because of the 10-run rule at Chaminade.

Jeff Hynicks had two doubles and three RBIs for Chaminade (6-1, 2-0).

Crespi 8, St. Francis 1--Mike Jackson pitched a two-hitter, striking out 13 and walking one, and the No. 7 Celts won a Mission League game at Valley College.

Jackson had three hits, including a double.

Tim Leveque of Crespi (5-2, 2-0) hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run fourth inning.

Notre Dame 15, Harvard-Westlake 0--Matt Cunningham hit a three-run homer and James Rivero had a three-run double in a seven-run second and the top-ranked Knights won a Mission League game at Franklin Field.

Thousand Oaks 12, Simi Valley 0--John Smith homered and doubled for the Lancers (4-2, 1-0) in a Marmonte League game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule at Simi Valley.

Brandon Palomarez, John Day and Chris Ferguson had singles, the only hits for Simi Valley (3-4, 0-1).

Moorpark 10, Agoura 7--Matt Norris hit a run-scoring double and a run-scoring single for the Musketeers in a Marmonte League victory at Agoura (3-2-1, 0-1-1).

Wes Rasmussen had six consecutive strikeouts to earn his third save, and had three hits for Moorpark (4-3, 1-0).

Lancaster 12, Palmdale 1--Eric Sundberg hit a two-run homer in the first and the Eagles won a Golden League opener at Palmdale.

Zach Dominguez of Lancaster (5-3) had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.

Steve Payte pitched a seven-hitter and fanned seven for the Eagles.

Highland 8, Littlerock 5--Daniel Champieux hit a grand slam in the first for the Bulldogs (6-1, 1-0) in a Golden League game at Highland.

Brandon Murphy (3-0) had a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings before yielding two walks and a home run to Delwyn Young.

Murphy struck out eight and walked four in five innings.

Quartz Hill 13, Antelope Valley 1--Travis Allen had two doubles, a single and struck out 13 for the Rebels (2-5, 1-0) in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley.

Rio Mesa 9, Oxnard 8--Nick Barroso hit a three-run, two-out homer in the sixth and the Spartans (6-1, 2-0) won a Pacific View League game at Rio Mesa.
