Villa Park Dominates Canyon Swimming Relays

Villa Park swept the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the Canyon relays Friday. The Spartans won a total of eight of the 14 events at Canyon High.

The Spartan boys won five of seven races, including the 400 individual medley relay (4 minutes 8.74 seconds), the 200 breaststroke (2:03.58), the 200 butterfly (1:46.16), the 200 backstroke (1:52.76) and the 200 medley (1:49.42). Santa Margarita took second (80) and Cypress was third (70).

The Villa Park girls won the 200 backstroke relay (2 minutes 5.56 seconds), the 400 freestyle (3:51.02) and the 500 freestyle (4:57.34) for 106 points.

Canyon finished with 102 points and took the 400 individual medley (4:23.37), 200 breaststroke (2:17.20) and the 200 medley (1:58.68). Santa Margarita was third with 96 points.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Rosary 98, Brea Olinda 81--Sarah Batchelor, Lisa McKinley, Caesie McHenry and Jenni Nelson won the 200 medley relay in 2:02.73 and the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.55 for the host Wildcats (2-2). They each won at least one individual race as well.

In nonleague golf:

Newport Harbor 54, Estancia 29 (match play)--Daniel Kush won 10 holes for Newport Harbor (4-1), with a overall score of 80 at Mesa Verde and Big Canyon. Scott Tippett and Tague Hurley won nine holes each for the Sailors.

In the Glendale Hoover softball tournament:

Estancia 7, Verdugo Hills 2--Joanna Danner struck out 12, walked one and allowed two hits to lead Estancia (6-2) to a third-place finish. Teammate Stephanie Danner had two hits and three RBIs.

In the Mohave (Ariz.) softball tournament:

Durango (Las Vegas) 1, Canyon 0--Chrystal Hewitt, Beka Anderson, Kim Jents and Marie Coleman each had two hits for Canyon (4-4-1).

The Comanches gave up one unearned run with two outs in the third inning of an earlier 8-1 victory over Rio Rancho (N.M.).

Canyon will play Fountain Valley at 11 a.m. today in the consolation semifinals.

Pacifica 10, Tucson (Ariz.) Sabino 1--Dara Webb had four hits and four runs scored for Pacifica (3-0).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 9, Brea Olinda 9 (Esperanza won on games, 76-74)--Jeff Cohen and Alex Lin swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0, for Esperanza (5-3).
