Young Has No-Hitter in Monarch Victory

Marissa Young had 13 strikeouts in her second no-hitter of the season as Mater Dei shut out Greenway (Ariz.), 9-0, in the third-place game of the Mojave softball tournament Saturday in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Mater Dei (7-1) was leading 2-0 in the sixth, then scored seven runs to force the mercy-rule victory.

In the semifinal game, Clovis defeated the Monarchs, 2-0. Mater Dei pitcher Tia Bollinger struck out 10 but gave up two home runs to Dee Costa.

Clovis defeated Woodbridge, 5-4, in the title game.

In nonleague baseball:

Brea Olinda 5-0, Fountain Valley 3-5--Danny Bendt pitched his first complete game of the season for Brea (5-3). Bendt had seven strikeouts for the Wildcats. In the second game, Casey Janssen had a three-run home run in the fifth inning for Fountain Valley. Sam Greco pitched six innings, giving up three hits and striking out six to get his first victory of the season for the Barons (6-2).

Cypress 6-7, Garden Grove 3-1--Ryan Justice was three for four with three RBIs and teammates Richard Herrera and Sean Zarate were both two for three in the first game for Cypress (6-2). In the second game, Thil Wannebo (1-0) went four innings for Cypress, giving up one hit and striking out six.

La Habra 13-7, Industry Workman 1-1--Junior Bryan Gailey gave up three hits and no walks in the second game for La Habra (6-1). Ramiro Godinez had two hits with two RBIs and Kyle Ballard went three for four with two doubles. Dave Zamarano pitched a two-hitter and struck out five in the five-inning first game for the Highlanders.

Los Amigos 5-5, Santa Ana 4-2--In the first game, Joel Hernandez tied the score for Santa Ana with a three-run homer in the third inning, but in the bottom of the fourth, two two-out RBI singles gave Los Amigos (8-0) the lead for good.

At the Orange County boys’ volleyball championships:

Newport Harbor advances--Led by Alan Limon with nine kills, the Sailors defeated Corona del Mar 15-10, 15-2 to advance to Monday’s Division I final.
