Concordia’s Giles Earns NAIA Honors

Concordia point guard Josh Giles was named a second-team men’s basketball All-American Tuesday by the NAIA. He is the first player at Concordia to be so honored.

Giles, a junior, is the Eagles’ all-time leading scorer with 1,539 points. He led Concordia into the final eight of last week’s NAIA Division I national tournament, averaging 19.7 points.

The women’s soccer team at Cal State Fullerton hosts the Mexican national team in an exhibition game at 7 tonight at Titan Stadium. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youths and seniors.

A dozen county track and field athletes will compete Saturday in the U.S. Community College Elite Invitational at the Arco Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

The first events begin at 11 a.m. and the last about 2:15 p.m.

The county participants:

Francisca Flores (Santa Ana), 400 meters; Etta Jackson (Santa Ana), discus and javelin; Monica Martinez (Santa Ana), 400-meter low hurdles and pole vault; Julie Steele (Fullerton), long jump; Tofi Togagae (Golden West), shotput and discus.

Matt Davis (Golden West), high jump; Robert Fuentes (Santa Ana), high jump; Dan Gaston (Saddleback), 5,000 meters; Aaron Lewis (Golden West), javelin; Eric Maag (Golden West), pole vault; Damien Roberts (Santa Ana), 110-meter high hurdles; Josh Vincelet (Saddleback), 5,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase;

The U.S. Adult National Badminton Championships return for the third consecutive year to the Orange County Badminton Club, April 1-4.

More than 60 of the country’s top players, including Kevin Han, top-ranked in men’s singles, and Yeping Tang and Cindy Shi, the country’s top two women players, are expected to compete in men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles.

Competition takes place from 6-10 p.m. today, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and the finals begin at 10 a.m. Sunday.
